The usually calm, and always focused, Ms. B is losing her cool. Of course, being accused of murder will do that to a person. Ms. B is under house arrest after being accused of murdering a grumpy old man. She’s doing her best to stay upbeat, but the accusations are weighing her down. Barbara, our protagonist, will do anything to keep Ms. B out of jail, including setting up a sting to capture the real culprit.No Substitute for Motives is the sixth book in the Subbing isn’t for Sissies series. This is a fun series with a group of very unique (quirky—LOL!) characters. Barbara is a great lead character. She’s funny and smart and can handle just about anything that’s thrown her way. The murder doesn’t take place early on, but I really didn’t care because I love spending time with these characters. With humorous dialogue, a fun mystery to solve, and an engaging cast, this entertaining read kept me turning the pages.
I hope the seventh book is in the works. I’m looking forward to reading more adventures starring Barbara and the gang. Happy reading!

Book so good had to read again
Probably will read again in the near future
I really enjoy the series and the characters. It's a fun, quick paced read, with believable and very likeable characters. I will be awaiting the next installment.
I have read most of her books and this series is a fun read. Love the characters and now can't wait to see how Ms B does in the dance off and what part Cheese Puff had to do with it.. Keep it up Ms Rose, love your writing.
Just finished No Substitute for Motives. Another wonderful story in Carolyn Rose's No Substitute series. Hope she has more to follow. May I just say, I love Mrs. Ballentine!!
I like this series. Though the mystery is solved in each book, personal storylines continue through the series. this one seriously hinted at the next book being set in las vegas at the dance competition.
I enjoyed this book by Carolyn Rose. I have read all of the previous "substitute teacher" books and know the characters pretty well. This book actually took place during the summer which did not involve substitute teaching. There were some comical moments and an interesting plot that will keep me looking forward to the next book in the series.
This book is a winning combination of humor & murder! Substitute Barbara Reed is back with a delightfully quirky & oddball cast of characters. Fans of this series will be happy to learn that Barb's unemployed sister Iz & history teacher Anston Marsden are back to provide comic relief. This time around former showgirl & neighbor Mrs. Ballantine is accused of murdering a cranky old man at the hotel where she is rehearsing her dance routine for her upcoming stint on Still Got That Strut.
