We all want our research to have an impact and to be cited by others. There are thousands of research articles published in our respective fields. How do we get someone to read our publications? This book shows you how to put your Title and Abstract into a story, along with the rest of your manuscript. Your research will stand out in a sea of peer-review publications, since it will be forged into a Scientific Story. As a research fellow in the laboratory of Professor Gerhard Wagner at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Luna was collaborating with four other top-notch laboratories in an interdisciplinary research effort to understand the end of the scanning mechanism required for protein synthesis in cells. They were sitting on a mound of research data collected by the various laboratories with varying expertise. This super-collaboration consisted of Physicists, Biologists, Structural Biologists, Biochemists, Chemists, a Computer Scientist, and a Chemical Engineer. There was so much data; yet they struggled to fashion a logical story for a peer-review publication. Dr. Luna was stuck. This book is written by an active research scientist, as a guide for other scientists doing research. This is how science should be written.
The Art of Scientific Storytelling Transform Your Research Manuscript using a StepbyStep Formula 1 Rafael E Luna
‘The Art of Scientific Storytelling, Transform Your Research Manuscript with a Step-by Step Formula’ now sits on the top of all my writing books!I commend Dr. Luna for his ability to lace together his background and passion for storytelling together with his scientific background and how we communicate science. For me, the process of learning is as much about how our thinking develops, as it is about how we communicate what we are learning. As scientists I am as excited about doing research, as I am about having the opportunity to share it. ‘The Art of Scientific Storytelling’ provided me with the ‘formula’ to structure my scientific writing into a smart congruent story.
Dr. Luna writes ‘the first ever book on Scientific Storytelling for peer review communication’. He walks you through steps of structure and content and outlines how you build a ‘dramatic curve’ and reflect on ‘what is at stake’ and why your research (story) is important.
The book is easy to read and to follow. The titles, bullet points and diagrams make it really easy to focus on a given topic. You can choose to work on a section of your paper and look at the diagram and guidelines for how that section can be structured. I read ‘The Art of Scientific Storytelling’ in one sitting and I was fueled with the desire to revisit and rewrite of all my current writing work. This motivation was also followed by the thought of sharing this ‘great find’ with all my colleagues and peers. If you are a researcher, a scientist, a developer or a writer, you will want to read and have this book.
The book jacket is artistically done; the orange color does make it stand out so that you will not have trouble looking for it when you are writing your next paper.

The Art of Scientific Storytelling Transform Your Research Manuscript using a StepbyStep Formula 1 Rafael E Luna Reviews
I see this book as a required manual for being able to convey your research in a clear way to your intended audience. The book teaches you to think about science in a way that isn't taught during your standard training. The ideas presented are applicable to manuscripts, theses, grants, etc. I wish I had this book around when I was a student, it would have made the process much easier.
Great concept, but I was disappointed in the book. The story grammar Luna uses does not match the macrostructure of scientific articles in peer reviewed journals of the social sciences and I found the diagrams difficult to distinguish. Still, an interesting concept and there were a few gems to be found.
This book provides a refreshing breakdown of the scientific writing process in a way that is accessible and executable, especially for scientists and engineers. I think this should be a required reading for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows -- and even for seasoned scientists it really puts things into perspective and will still be an excellent resource for the next journal article or grant proposal.
The author makes some good points in this book, but they are repeated too often, and in the end I found myself scrolling through the last half of the book rather than reading through.
I'm a graduate student and have been struggling to write my dissertation proposal (which is what led me to search for books on scientific writing) and this is by far the most helpful/transformational resource I've found. Clear and well-reasoned, the book presents a fantastic framework/mindset for scientific writing that has really helped me to better convey my research to others. I've been amazed at the change in my work's reception especially because I'm presenting the exact same data as before.
This book has the best advice for scientific writers! I have now bought 3 copies of it and given them to junior scientists trying to write their first paper. I also used the advice in this book on my last R21 which scored 15. Use the advice in this book! Skip chapter 1 but treat the rest like it is the bible. Yes, it seems way overpriced for an 80 page print copy, but it is worth every damn cent.
Overall, the book is interesting, although a bit repetitive sometimes. it gives some very general guidelines on how to craft your findings and make a compelling story out of them. I though felt a lack of generalizability since it seems the author is taking his Cell Reports paper as the only example. perhaps it would help if the author could use several other hallmark papers so that readers form other fields can find applying storytelling to their own research. please note that this is not a book on how to write, but on how to organize your paper. it is therefore suited for advanced scholars.
