Presence describes a fictional story about Jesus’ ongoing physical appearances to three people in a small mid-western town. Under the promise that they may never tell anyone about their experiences, each one meets with Jesus personally and engages the issues in their relationship with Him and in everyday life. Walking with Jesus sometimes seems more like a dream, distant and unrelated to our everyday life. This book brings Jesus into our everyday life through a modern day story that everyone can relate to. It helps engage your imagination and expectation of what it would be like to have Jesus show up in person here and now. While reading it I found myself interacting in prayer with Jesus in a new and fresh way. Not only does this book tell a good story and stimulate the imagination for the things of God in a way that creates hunger for spiritual growth but it also introduces the reader to some ideas on how to pursue the journey with Jesus.
I completed reading Presence and enjoyed it very much. Your writing style makes it so easy to enter the story and catch the concepts you are attempting to communicate. Many times in the story I could hear your voice in a certain phrase or word and I enjoyed that. I was also reminded of times when we practiced the very things you were introducing in the story. I was also very encouraged to continue pressing into the Presence each morning and throughout each day. He does continue to speak and I continue to listen and observe him in the world around me. Many thanks to you and Imago Christi for moving me in the direction of His Presence. I'm so glad you invited me into the journey. Terry Fike
I thought it would be hard to make a book like this sound realistic, but it is amazingly so. The reactions of the characters and the modernization of Jesus were down-to-earth. The whole book illustrated the "spiritual formation" message in a clear, compelling and interesting way and I believe the reader will find Jesus' presence more real after going through it.
I finished this book a couple of days ago. I really loved it!! Sad I'm done with it. I plan on moving into the workbook next to continue the adventure.
Great author; very knowledgeable insight into the presence of Jesus in our daily, ordinary lives. From start to finish, the book commands your full, uninterrupted attention.
I was deeply impacted by the reality of how Jesus was presented. Many truths of Scripture were interwoven in the dialogue and teaching. There is now a small chair next to my devotional area where I mentally place my Jesus so I can speak to him and feel his presence at the beginning of my day. I feel his love wanting me to live in His presence.
I have been beautifully impacted by this book. I felt, at times. as though you were writing about me. Inner pain was revealed in the deep places of my soul, yet joy seemed to be close by to bring healing and peace. I laughed, cried and hungered for more. I loved the book and where it has led me. Personally I found it very deep and meaningful. It's not "Mansions of the Heart", but it took me to a wonderful place. It introduced me to me and has changed my thinking in such a good way.
If there is one thing (and only one) that I didn't think was totally necessary, it was some of the language. Though it may have been added for "shock value", I believe it hurt the book. I may sound like a prude, but "entertaining" myself with crude language is not something I do or endorse. As a pastor, I would have a difficult time doing a group study with this material simply because of some wording, even though I and our people desperately need it.
